Message from the Chair 2020-2021
On behalf of the OCEA Leadership Team, I would like to welcome everyone back to a new school year. This year will be especially challenging as we work to provide Experiential Learning opportunities for Ontario students. I look forward to working with the OCEA team and educators from across the province to develop resources and support one other.
Congratulations on getting your students through a very chaotic year. Walking a picket line and a global pandemic were certainly not what we were preparing for as we entered the 2019-2020 school year. OCEA met the challenge by collaborating with teachers around the province to add many resources to our website, and we continue the work of updating our key documents. The OCEA “Ethical Guidelines” (Section One) has been updated to reflect the new curriculum and DCO3O course, and is available through our website in the Resources (Members Only) section. We continue to consult with legal counsel and the ministries of Education and Labour on the OCEA “Legal Issues” (Section Two) and will release the update in 2021. The Greater Toronto Area Cooperative Education Association (GTACEA) writing teams created some amazing resources that we were thrilled to make available on our website. My hope is that these new resources will continue to support you as you create lesson plans for your students.
OCEA’s Mission Statement is “Facilitating and Supporting the Exchange of Ideas Among Experiential Learning Professionals”, to ensure that our members are prepared for the future of Cooperative Education and all other forms of Experiential Learning. I encourage you to become a member (if you have not already done so) to be a part of that exchange. Membership allows you to stay informed regarding the latest developments, to receive OCEA e-NEWS bulletins, network with colleagues, and access the Members’ Only Resource section of our website.
To make registering / renewing your OCEA membership with ease, OCEA has implemented the yearly School Board Subscription (SBS) option, please contact your school board lead to see if a School Board Subscription (SBS) has been purchased. Should your school board not purchase a School Board Subscription (SBS), you can still become involved through an individual OCEA membership, please consult the Membership section on our website for full details.
No one can predict when we will be able to gather in the near future for our next event but the OCEA Leadership Team are hard at work looking at alternatives for providing Professional Development for our members and will release information once those plans are in place.
In closing, please know that OCEA welcomes and values the opinions and feedback of its members. Please do not hesitate to contact any one of the OCEA Board of Directors, OCEA Provincial Representatives or our OCEA Executive Administrative Assistant, Carol Madsen, if you have any information you would like to share or have any questions you may need answered.
Here’s to a great school year!
